Japan Rail Pass Quick Reset

Price Increase

As you may have already known, the prices of the Japan Rail Pass have been raised since October 1st, 2023. These changes impact different pass categories, resulting in increases ranging from 65% to 77%, and 48% to 56%. And this has become a significant issue for us travelers, making us wondering is it still worth it paying the high prices?

Usage

The existing benefits remain unaffected. As an additional perk, the Japan Rail Pass now incorporates an exclusive Nozomi Mizuho ticket, allowing pass holders access to faster train options, a feature previously unavailable. However, it's important to note that, an extra fee is required to utilize these trains despite the overall price increase.

Special Offer

Commenced on October 1, 2023, holders of the JAPAN RAIL PASS will be eligible for exclusive services and discounts. Kindly display your JAPAN RAIL PASS when visiting the participating establishments.

New Changes

When boarding the JR WEST Miyajima Ferry, connecting Miyajima and Miyajimaguchi, please take note that there is now an additional fee of 100 yen, known as the Miyajima Visitor Tax, which is obligatory when visiting the island. It's worth mentioning that previously, this ferry ride was included in the pass, without any extra charge. This change has been implemented to address overcrowding issues on the island.

Where to purchase?

Currently, the Japan Rail Pass can only be acquired through the official dedicated website or authorized overseas agents appointed by JR. As the local sales offices within Japan will no longer offer this service.

Same Price

Now with the changes, whether you make your purchase from the Official Japan Rail Pass website or authorized overseas agents designated by JR, the prices are the same. This marks a change from the previous system, where buying through overseas agents often offered more cost-effective options.

Now, the advantage has shifted between the two options. Buying from the Official Japan Rail Pass website, now provides the benefit of reserving your seat ticket online, a feature that is unavailable when purchasing through overseas agents. But, you still need to go to the ticket machine to retrieve your tickets.

Is it worth it?

In brief, if your travel is limited to a single city or region, the Japan Rail Pass may not be your best choice, instead, opt for a regional pass.

However, if your itinerary involves exploring two or more cities or regions, then the Japan Rail Pass becomes a more cost-effective option, typically covering more than what its cost.

But still, you should still plan your routes and consider whether it benefit you or not. Taking into consideration it also cover local trains, JR Buses and the recently added special offers.

If you are still ponding on whether to get the Japan Rail Pass, hope this quick insight on the new changes can help you decide and better prepare for your upcoming trip to Japan.
